Crushing Me Softly

120" x 20" x 26"

Crushing Me Softly has a haunting presence that compels the viewer to experience contradicting emotions. The object is made up of a ten-foot-tall stack of pillows with steel rods piercing each of them. The pillows are objects that represent a calm and familiar feeling that one can personally experience and relate to. I have emphasized this feeling by repeating the pillow over and over, using multiple types. Then, by piercing the stack of pillows, the viewer is pushed to feel uncomfortable. The viewer is left with an uneasy feeling of opposing emotion. This piece would be very interesting to watch outside over time. The pillows would change by exposure to the elements, and the steel rods would rust, sending pigment onto the pillows. The tall tower would be made stable by bolting it directly into the pavement.
